Site Fourteen – Salt Lick Camp

Retrace your route out of the Technology Park and turn right on SR 3039 for 1.5 miles.  On your right you will pass the American Video Glass Company.  Braddock’s Road ran through the middle of the plant.

After 1.5 miles, you will need to look hard for an historical marker for Salt Lick Camp on the right side of the road just before a Case dealership.  The marker is very low to the ground, but there is space to pull over and get out to read it.

It was at this camp, known 1755, that Braddock’s senior officers held a council of war.  Despite strong opposition, the council made the fateful decision to press on to Fort Duquesne without waiting for Colonel Dunbar’s troops, supplies, and artillery to catch up and reunite the army.

In this area, you will also find a deeply worn section of the trail approaching Big Sewickley.
