Site One – Fort Necessity

For a pleasant day trip we suggest beginning at Fort Necessity located on U.S. Rte. 40 east of Uniontown in Fayette County.  This is an important site, for it is here in 1754 that young George Washington was besieged and forced to surrender by the French.  That event helped persuade the British government to organize a many pronged attack on French forces in the Great Lakes area in 1755.  General Braddock, of course, led one of the attacking armies.  Managed by the National Park Service, the Fort Necessity site has a museum, a film on the events of 1754, costumed guides, and a reconstruction of Washington’s palisaded fortification.
